Welcome to Thái Son, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of New York’s bustling Chinatown, located at 89 Baxter St. This unclaimed Vietnamese eatery has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, thanks to its vibrant atmosphere and the tantalizing aroma of fresh herbs wafting through the air. With a menu that reflects the rich and diverse flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, Thái Son offers a delightful dining experience at an affordable price.

Upon entering, you are greeted by a lively ambiance, perfect for a quick bite or a satisfying meal. The tables may be cramped, but the friendly staff makes the experience worthwhile, ensuring a quick service that gets you your food in no time—most customers report an impressive turnaround time of just 5 to 10 minutes.

One of their standout offerings is undoubtedly the 'Xe Lua' pho, which boasts an extra-large portion of slender, smooth noodles swimming in a rich, savory broth brimming with diverse spices and fresh herbs. Accompanied by generous slices of beef and brisket, along with a cornucopia of toppings like mint, bean sprouts, and cilantro, it’s no wonder this dish receives rave reviews. Customers like Nancy A. have praised it for its heft and flavor, making it ideal for satisfying not just your hunger but also for leftovers to enjoy later.

For the vegetarian crowd, Thái Son does not disappoint. Options like sautéed mixed vegetables and fried soy bean cake infused with lemongrass and chili sauce showcase the versatility of Vietnamese cooking. Pairing this with a refreshing Salty Plum Soda or a warm cup of jasmine tea only elevates the experience further.

While the dishes are generally well-received, it's worth noting that experiences may vary. Some guests, such as Cristal U., mentioned that while the ambiance and service were outstanding, the food didn’t completely meet their expectations. Nevertheless, many return customers sing praises of the authentic flavors that transport them right to the heart of Vietnam.

Thái Son is not just a restaurant; it's a celebration of Vietnamese heritage, offering an authentic taste while being part of the vibrant tapestry that is Chinatown. Whether you're a seasoned lover of Vietnamese cuisine or just curious to explore, Thái Son is a solid choice that promises to leave your palate tantalized and craving more.

Vibrant and inviting atmosphere. The aroma of fresh herbs wafted through the air, teasing my senses and building my anticipation. Staff was friendly and hot jasmine tea on table. I was impressed by the vast array of options, from classic pho to more adventurous dishes like bun cha and goi cuon. I couldn't wait to dive in and explore the flavors and delights of Vietnamese cuisine! The food however was not the best. It was ok. We normally go to Nha Trang next door, but it was closed (they close on Mondays.) The appetizers and the pho was merely "ok." The salmon was not great, and the Vietnamese coffee was substandard. All in all, the service and atmosphere was great but the food was not.

This place can get crowded and boy they give a lot of noodles for their number 1 option on their menu, Xe Lua! It's an extra large bowl of pho! I ordered the pho to go and since it was raining, it was nice that the food was packaged in a brown paper bag along with a plastic bag to go. Double packaging. Once I got back to work, I opened the bag and took out the contents and immediately knew it was a lot of food. The soup broth was to the top and I tried to fill the bowl with all the noodles and it doesn't work. The bowl was not big enough and every time I put more noodles in it, the soup broth wants to spill out. Noodles were very slender and smooth and the seasoning of the broth made the noodles very savory and juicy. Apart from the slices of beef and brisket, there was a piece of mint, bean sprouts, lemon wedge, scallions, chives, and cilantro. So many ingredients to spice up the soup. Luckily the pho was that big for me to have enough for dinner leftovers so it's a plus that they gave a lot of noodles.

Solid choice for Vietnamese food in Chinatown! I will say that most Vietnamese food in Chinatown is a bit more Chinese-Vietnamese but I heard Vietnamese being spoken by the staff in the restaurant so that is pretty authentic. The restaurant is quite busy and lively but there are many seats and food came very quickly, about 5-10 minutes after we ordered, maybe even less. We got the grilled chicken pho and the grilled pork and spring roll rice vermicelli bun. The pho broth was flavorful and you can taste the different spices and herbs like mint. The spring rolls were very yummy and crispy! The meat portions were very large and we had trouble finishing it all.

The ambiance is that of a bustling restaurant. Usually, you're seated soon upon arrival with a cup of warm tea. Today, I got the calamari and spring rolls. The calamari was more like a salad and would have sufficed for lunch for one . The red sauce, in case anyone is wondering, is sweet and goes well with the calamari. Have been coming here for a couple of years now and they've been pretty consistent. Would recommend to friends and family.

This place looks like it has the same menu, decor, staff and everything that another Vietnamese restaurant has called Nam Son...maybe it's the same owners because the resemblance is striking. We ordered the rice vermicelli and the taste was the same. We loved it and now we know that if we're ever in that part of Chinatown near Canal Street as opposed to Grand Street that we can get great Viet food.
